Chapter 16

*Gemma*

I turned from Thad and went to the bathroom.

"I'm sure, Gemma," I heard Thad say from his bed.

Funny—the way he conceded to me as I walked away. A little bit sweet, and a little bit shy. How could anyone treat him the way that Jo Ann bitch did? I held my hand under the shower to make sure it was hot enough. Maybe men are right about some women, maybe they are pure evil.

After the water had soaked every cell of my body, I fought with the miniature shampoo bottles, trying to get enough. Over the water, I heard Thad flipping through the channels on the television. They went by so fast it was difficult to believe he could make a decision that quick. I rinsed the shampoo from my hair and rubbed the soap off of my body. My fingernails and toenails needed serious attention. Maybe my new daddy would pay for a manicure, pedicure, and a new wardrobe. He owed me that much and more. A deep clutching pain gripped my chest. How could Mom be so dumb to screw that jerk? Oh, yeah—kind of like me with Bruce.

As I stepped out of the tub and grabbed a towel, I turned as Thad leaned against the bathroom door. "Pretty rough day today, huh?" he asked.

I nodded. He was pretty brazen—at least for him—to stand there and watch me towel off. "I don't have anything to put on except my dirty clothes. I know you hate it when I walk around like this, but I don't want to sleep in dirty clothes."

"Maybe we should turn on the heat. You'll freeze tonight."

"No, I can't breathe if the air is too hot. It's okay. I probably won't get much sleep tonight anyway." I walked to the bed and pulled the blanket off and wrapped myself in it. "Do you think Daddy Dearest knows anything about the kids Bruce is selling?"

"I don't know, Gemma. He didn't exactly say that, but it sounds like he's not too happy about some of Bruce's dealings."

I shrugged. "Well, I bet he's like Robin Hood. You know, he may be an outlaw, but a good, bad guy. Someone who wants to do the right thing and help people, but just does it in kind of an illegal way. I think it's pretty noble of him to want to stop Bruce."

"Noble?"

I nodded. Maybe the way I said it did sound a bit stupid, but Norman was my dad and I wanted him to be… well… noble—whether he actually was or not. The cold hit me and I shuddered.

"How are you cold? It's about seventy-five degrees in here, you just had a hot shower, and you're all wrapped up in a blanket."

"I'm cold all the time."

Thad took the blanket off of his bed and pulled it apart from the sheet. He draped it around my back, pulled it tight, and pulled me close to him. My jaw chattered. His spicy musk scent enveloped me and enticed me. I wished I had a couple of free hands.
